Making IT More Energy-Efficient

Arvato Systems is constantly striving to optimize the power supply processes at its own data centers and ensure energy-efficient operations.

A Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) value of 1.39 was determined for the Arvato Systems data centers in Gütersloh. Technical measures such as optimized cooling and airflow help ensure more efficient operation of the infrastructure. The audited data center received an award from the eco Association for its energy-efficient technical design. And we rely on green electricity: The Gütersloh data centers purchase hydroelectric power from the local municipal utility.

In addition, an absorption chiller has been in use at our data centers in Gütersloh since 2017. It is capable of generating cooling from thermal energy, thereby supplying the servers with cooling air in a significantly more energy-efficient manner. The heat used for this conversion is generated in a combined heat and power plant operated by a sister company. Heat that would otherwise be lost unused is thus utilized to cool the servers during the summer months.

We are also continuously optimizing the infrastructure of our data centers to further improve energy efficiency. We have achieved this through a variety of measures, such as

• Implementation of Lighting Control Systems
• Improving Cold Air Distribution
• Rising Temperatures in Data Centers
• Use of UPS systems (UPS: “uninterruptible power supply”) with higher efficiency.

With the shift toward a software-defined data center and the accompanying expansion of cloud offerings, further steps are being taken.
