Secure and Future-Proof on an SAP Cloud Platform

As part of its future-oriented IT strategy, Arvato relies on secure and state-of-the-art technologies to serve its customers' needs and play a central role in the global logistics market as a driver of innovation. In doing so, the service provider in supply chain management uses SAP and Microsoft technologies in particular.

As part of the project, a broad-based team of IT and industry experts migrated the 40 existing SAP systems from SAP R/3 Oracle OnPremsie to SAP S/4HANA and moved them to the Azure Cloud in parallel with the respective migration. Two large projects, usually carried out one after the other, were successfully implemented here simultaneously within two and a half years.

Despite the significant impact on day-to-day business, processes at Arvato continued to run undisturbed during the migration. This smooth and fast course of the complex conversion also impressed many of the service provider's customers using SAP R/3 Oracle OnPremise.

As a logistics service provider, we have taken a significant step in migrating from SAP R/3 Oracle OnPremise to SAP S/4HANA @Azure. We will be in a position to support our customers' growth targets in the best possible way in the future. The success factors in creating a uniform, secure, and future-proof SAP cloud platform were an exceptional team effort with our IT service provider Arvato Systems, an extreme focus of our global organization on this lighthouse project, and the outstanding commitment of our employees.

Project Overview

Initial Situation

Arvato has been developing industry-specific and innovative supply chain management and e-commerce solutions for several years. Due to the strong growth and expansion of the international service business, the IT landscape has grown considerably.  For example, several ERP systems were set up with a respective industry focus, and a new technical SAP orientation was added with SAP EWM and SAP TM

The SAP landscape before migration consisted of several ERP landscapes, CRM systems, TM and event management systems, decentralized EWM systems, SAP GTS (Global Trade), and several additional applications (Adobe Document Server, SAP Gateway, Webdispatcher).

Arvato consistently invests in cloud technologies to be the international supply chain company with the strongest customer orientation and focus on data and IT. The migration of the existing SAP landscape, the relocation of IT systems and applications to Microsoft Azure, and an expansion of processes through cloud services were necessary. This step forms the basis for new technologies, tools, and strategies to take customers' logistics processes to the next level.

A joint global project was set up with IT and industry experts to implement the IT strategy. As part of the project, the existing SAP systems were migrated to Microsoft Azure, and selected systems at the application level were converted to SAP S/4HANA simultaneously.

Different migration procedures were used for the technical changeover depending on the initial situation. Within the framework of the risk strategy, several test runs were carried out - particularly for large, business-critical systems - to ensure the success of the migration and to further reduce downtimes through accompanying measures.

A dedicated network connection via an express route to Microsoft Azure provided the necessary bandwidth for migrating the large database volumes. Azure NetApp Files (ANF) and activities to ensure system performance in the cloud environment were also part of the respective migrations.

The joint migration plan considered business-critical periods for the logistics service provider, such as the peak season with above-average outbound volumes.
